Leaders In Training Graduates’ Success and Transition to College
With a vision to make a difference in the lives of the next generation of leaders, 17 International Coaching Federation (ICF) coaches will provide pro bono coaching services to 17 first-generation college students who graduated from Cohort 8 of the Leaders in Training (L.I.T.) program.
Leading the effort is ICF Master Certified Coach, Wendy Preyssler. As Past President of the ICF Nevada and current board member of the newly formed ICF Southern Nevada, Wendy explains, “A lot of things can happen to derail first-generation college students from achieving their goals as they transition from high school into college. These coaches are dedicating their time to support students in prioritizing, identifying the traits that hold them back, and keeping them on track to achieve their goals and graduate college.”
Coach Wendy Preyssler chose to focus the ICF Southern Nevada International Coaching Week community coaching initiative to the L.I.T. students because she has seen how the program empowers first-generation college graduates from diverse backgrounds to end systemic and structural inequities and redefine leadership.
At the heart of coaching lies the power of community. International coaching week is an opportunity to be a part of a supportive and inspiring community of ICF coaches who understand the transformative impact and power of the profession. This year’s International Coaching Week theme, “Explore Your Potential,” fits in with these students, who have spent the last four years in the L.I.T. after school program, developing their leadership and supporting them in graduating high school and being accepted to colleges, or where appropriate, military or trade schools. The participating ICF coaches are partnering with the L.I.T. students to support their successful transition into college.
Mirna L. Lopez, a L.I.T. program graduate, shared why she is inspired to receive the assistance of an ICF coach and accomplish her goal of becoming a therapist. “I want to help heal generations of trauma in the Hispanic community. Many Hispanic parents have gone through a lot of trauma immigrating or with child labor and have never sought help. I want to be there for them.”

During the recent May 9, 2023 L.I.T. Cohort 8 Graduation, the participating ICF credentialed coaches were in attendance and met the students that they will be coaching. The coaching engagements will take place over a period of 3 months, with each student receiving a minimum of 10 hours of pro bono coaching as they transition from high school into college. The coaches will support the students to set goals, create awareness, build confidence, maintain focus, and establish good habits that will increase their academic and personal success.
